Safety First

When you walk into our office it is very clear that we care about the cleanliness of this practice. We designate time every day into keeping our office sparkling clean. Upon entering into this office not only is it clean at first sight, it is also clean all the way down to the microscopic level. Cleanliness directly impacts patient safety, and patient safety is the number one concern at Smiling Springs orthodontics. When we refer to safety we are talking about contamination. The measures taken to prevent any kind of contamination are taken daily to protect our patients and the staff that work here. Throughout the day, every day, we sterilize, sanitize, clean, and follow OSHA’s strict standards to preventing any kind of contamination.

Sterilization is the process that destroys all microorganisms on the surface of an article or in a fluid to prevent disease transmission associated with the use of that item. Every item that is used in or for the mouth is completely sterilized every day. With the help of our specialized equipment, we ensure that every instrument is completely sterilized, safe, and ready for use. Our equipment is tested weekly to ensure proper function. This is just one of the many steps we take to ensure our patients safety here in our Office.

Sanitation is the act or process of making something completely clean and free from bacteria. Before and after every patient is seen in our office, all surfaces that come in contact with the patients are completely sanitized. First and foremost our operatory is sanitized with every patient. This includes all surfaces, the brushing station, and even the chairs. All other areas of the office are sanitized on a daily basis as well. This includes our laboratory which is where we make our appliances, such as retainers and expanders. Another area that is sanitized multiple times throughout the day is the sterilization area itself!

The sterilization area is where we sterilize all of our instruments. This area is constantly being sprayed down with a specialized cleaner, then wiped up, and sprayed down again completely ensuring the sanitation process.

While sterilization and sanitation take priority in this practice, we also do the more “traditional” cleaning throughout the rest of the office as well. This includes all the things you would do in your own home, such as sweeping, moping, dusting, and organizing. The office is properly maintained by a strict cleaning schedule. At the end of each day the practice is swept as well as moped, after all of the regular sanitizing and sterilization has been completed. Dusting is done weekly and the organizing is done throughout the week. One of the great things about this is that both Ashley and I love to clean and organize, talk about a good fit!

The staff here at Smiling Springs takes great pride in our practice. Work is your home away from home after all, and we treat our office as such. We take care of our patients like we would care for our family, even if it is through small things such as sweeping or pressing things such as sterilization. Patient safety is always our top priority, and you can count on that.

Fall Festival Acacia Park

Last Sunday, September 15, 2019, Smiling Springs Orthodontics participated in the Fall Festival. This was an event in downtown Colorado Springs at Acacia Park. I gotta say, we had an awesome time! We teamed up with “Made for More Project”, who is a nonprofit organization, to be apart of this event.  This is the second annual Fall Festival.

Christina and Ashley spent some time preparing for the event by making the pumpkin bean bag toss game (pictured below). We put a lot of work into it. We cut it out into the shape of the pumpkin and painted several coats of orange. We put our own twist on it by adding braces to him. It was an awesome opportunity for some team building.

The game was, having to make 2 out of 3 bean bags into either the eyes or the mouth and we were giving out prizes to the winners. We had lines of kids but also parents wanting to play. We really enjoyed watching the smiles on the kids faces when they were tossing the bean bags through the pumpkins eyes and mouth.  It was an awesome turn out. The fall festival included live music, food trucks, face painting and pumpkin painting. We were so happy to be apart of this community event.
